This moment connection joins a wide flange beam to a wide flange column using complete penetration groove welds at the top and bottom beam flanges. The flange welds are specified as CPUT (complete penetration) and require D1.8 seismic-rated welding procedures. The beam web is connected to the column flange via a shear plate, with the plate thickness and bolt configuration determined by the standard bolted connection schedule. Continuity plates are required at the column web, with specific detailing referenced on sheet 2/B111.S7.202. Backer plates must be removed after welding and the surface ground smooth where exposed to view.
