A steel beam supports a roof assembly featuring sheathing and welded studs over wood nailers. A circular hole up to five inches in diameter accommodates a three-inch maximum diameter pipe centered in the web. A three-eighths-inch thick by three-inch wide by twenty-four-inch long stiffener plate is welded to each side of the web at the penetration using quarter-inch fillet welds. Clearances require a two-inch minimum distance from the bottom of the sheathing to the top of the hole and a three-inch minimum distance below the hole. Pipe sizing and location are coordinated per sprinkler drawings.
