A non-frame beam moment connection to a hollow structural section or pipe column uses top and bottom continuity plates and a bolted shear plate connection. The continuity plates match the beam flange thickness plus one-eighth inch with a minimum thickness of one-half inch and yield strength of fifty kilopounds per square inch, interrupting the column at the top and bottom flanges and extending one-half inch beyond the face of the column where the beam occurs on only one side. Complete joint penetration welds attach the column to the top and bottom continuity plates and the beam flanges. Shear connections utilize one-inch diameter American Society for Testing and Materials A490 slip-critical bolts in lieu of bearing-type bolts, with plate sizing and fastener quantities referenced to plan details. Cantilevered beams require shoring until complete joint penetration welding is fully completed.
