This detail defines the geometry and dimensional limits for weld access holes in structural steel columns where flange thickness exceeds 2 inches. The cutout features a 1/2-inch radius transitioning from the column flange to web, with height dimensioned to a maximum of 1-1/2 inches or 1.5 times the web thickness, and length dimensioned to a maximum of 1-1/2 inches or the web thickness. Edges are beveled as required for the selected groove weld procedure. The weld access hole complies with Figure 5.2 of AWS D1.1, while AWS D1.8 alternate geometry per Figure 6.2 is explicitly prohibited at these locations.

WELD ACCESS HOLE SHOWN PER FIGURE 5.2 OF AWS D1.1, SUBJECT TO FABRICATOR'S APPROVAL. HOWEVER, AWS D1.8 ALTERNATE GEOMETRY PER FIGURE 6.2 NOT ACCEPTABLE AT THESE LOCATIONS.
