The steel column is supported by a concrete plinth, which sits atop a concrete footing. A one-half inch by seventeen-inch diameter ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel base plate is welded to the column with a five-sixteenths inch fillet weld and includes weep holes as specified by the architect. The assembly is anchored to the footing using four one-inch diameter ASTM F1554 Grade 36 anchor rods. A layer of one and one-half inch non-shrink grout is placed between the base plate and the top of the footing. All steel embedded within the concrete plinth must be coated with an asphaltic emulsion for corrosion protection.
