This assembly consists of a head beam supported by two columns, with the connection facilitated by a centered knife plate and a one-quarter inch cap plate. The knife plate thickness is specified as the greater of three-eighths of an inch or the pipe wall thickness. The knife plate is welded to the column with five-eighths inch fillet welds on all sides, typical unless noted otherwise. The cap plate is also welded to the column with five-eighths inch fillet welds on both the near side and far side. The columns are set on base plates with a one-inch grout space above the foundation.
