The water supply pipe is laid on a solid shelf excavated at one side of the common trench, maintaining a minimum clear horizontal distance of twelve inches from the sewer line. The bottom of the water pipe must be positioned not less than twelve inches above the top of the sewer or drain line. Building sewers or drainage piping constructed of clay or unapproved materials within a building shall not be run in the same trench unless these dimensional separation requirements are met. The separation ensures potable water protection from potential contamination by drainage piping within the foundation limits.
