An underground gas piping trench is excavated with a minimum width of twelve inches and finished flush with grade. The below-grade piping rests on a bed of salt-free sand or pea gravel compacted to ninety-eight percent of maximum dry weight according to ASTM D 698, extending two inches below and six inches above the pipe. A number twelve solid copper tracer wire is attached to the piping with nylon ties at eight-foot centers. Warning tape is installed in the trench twelve inches above the piping. The remaining trench is backfilled with satisfactory soil placed in eight-inch layers and compacted.
