This assembly consists of a steel column supporting a head member, with a knife plate centered at the top of the column. The knife plate thickness is defined as the greater of 3/8 inch or the pipe wall thickness. A 1/4 inch cap plate is provided on both the near side and far side of the connection. The knife plate is welded to the column and head with 5/8 inch fillet welds on all sides, typical unless noted otherwise. The column terminates at a base plate with a 1 inch grout space below. The pipe connection at the head is referenced as being provided by others.
