A duct, pipe, or conduit penetrates a sound-rated wall assembly, applicable at all sound-rated construction including interior insulated assemblies. The penetrating service is secured with overhead supports spaced four to eight inches typically on both sides of the wall. An annular space of one-quarter inch is sealed on both sides of the wall using acoustical sealant. Duct penetrations require a twenty gauge thickness extending two inches minimum beyond both sides of the wall. Unlined exposed metal ducts must be covered with one and one-half inch thick acoustical insulation.
