A metal pipe penetrates a gypsum board partition framed with studs spaced at sixteen inches on center, where stud sizes vary from three and five-eighths to eight inches. Layers of five-eighths inch Type X gypsum board face both sides of the wall. An annular space of one-quarter inch maximum surrounds the pipe within the opening. The space between the pipe and gypsum board is fully packed, and a one-quarter inch diameter bead of Underwriter's Laboratories classified firestop caulk, such as 3M Type CP-25 WB or equal, runs continuously at the junction of the pipe and the wall on both faces. This assembly conforms to Underwriter's Laboratories firestop system WL 1001, providing a one-hour F-rating and a one-hour T-rating.
