A round penetration passes through the web of a steel beam subject to specific dimensional limits and reinforcement requirements. A schedule 40 pipe sleeve matching the beam flange width is installed where required, attached with one-quarter inch fillet welds on each side of the web. The opening diameter is limited to a maximum of one-third of the beam depth, positioned within an allowable zone extending up to a span divided by six from the centerline. Reinforcing is omitted when the round opening diameter is one-sixth of the beam depth or less. Unshown penetrations require contractor submittal and structural engineer of record approval.
