A duct, pipe, or conduit penetrates a sound-rated wall assembly with a clearance of 1 inch plus or minus a quarter inch around the perimeter. The annular space is sealed with acoustical sealant, foam backer rod, and safing batt insulation packed between the penetration and the wall construction. Hanger supports are positioned 4 inches to 8 inches typically on both sides of the wall. Unlined exposed metal ducts require 1.5 inches of thick acoustical insulation, and penetrations require 20 gauge extended 2 inches minimum beyond both sides of the wall.
