A mechanical duct penetrates a fire-rated partition through a sleeve as required, maintaining a half-inch clearance around the perimeter. The annular space is packed with loose rockwool or glass fiber insulation and sealed with a three-quarter-inch diameter backer rod and fire-rated acoustical caulking at both faces. This detail applies to all ducts penetrating walls, floors, or ceilings of mechanical attic spaces and all penetrations of fire-rated or fire-resistive construction.
