An HVAC duct passes through an acoustically rated gypsum wallboard partition maintaining a three-quarter-inch to one-inch clearance gap around the perimeter. The annular space is packed with 2.5 pounds per cubic foot mineral wool batt insulation and sealed on both sides of the wall with a non-hardening acoustical sealant or firestopping mastic. The duct is independently supported to prevent direct contact with the partition framing. Tape and joint compound are explicitly omitted to prevent bridging between the gypsum wallboard and the duct.
