Standard installation method for a tree planting pit featuring angled sides, a sloped bottom, and an optional four-foot auger hole for clay soil conditions. The root ball is set two inches above the finish grade with the trunk flare remaining visible above the mulch layer, and the top one-third of the wire basket and burlap are removed. Amended backfill is placed around the root ball while sides and bottom of the pit are roughened. Two eight-foot tree stakes are driven twelve inches into undisturbed soil and secured to the trunk using a continuous flexible tree tie fastened with two roofing nails.
