The rootball is set at two inches above finish grade on firm native soil, with the planting pit excavated to two and one-half times the rootball diameter and backfilled with a soil mix. A three-inch high watering basin berm is created around the tree and covered with a one-inch to two-inch layer of shredded bark mulch. Two two-inch diameter lodgepole pine tree stakes, treated with copper naphthenate, are installed in a V-configuration relative to the prevailing wind and secured to the trunk using rubber or vinyl cinch ties fastened with galvanized screws. The root zone is flooded after planting to remove air pockets and settle the soil, and stake placement avoids damaging branches or piercing the rootball.
