A concrete slab bears on compacted subgrade with a thickened edge adjacent to a planting area. The planting area is filled with two inches of mulch over planting soil. A control joint is cut to one-fourth the depth of the slab, finished with a one-quarter-inch rounded radius edge typical. The concrete surface requires no shiners or tool marks.
