The plant root ball is set into an excavation measuring two times the diameter of the container, with the root ends lightly loosened before placement. The root collar is positioned higher than the surrounding finish grade. Backfill mix is placed around the root ball within the undisturbed soil excavation. A three-inch layer of mulch is applied at the finish grade, maintained one inch away from the plant stem.
