The bottom of the root ball rests on existing or recompacted soil within modified soil of variable depth. The top of the root ball is positioned one to two inches above finished grade prior to mulching, with soil tamped around the root ball in six-inch lifts to brace the tree without over-compacting. Wire is removed and burlap is cut down as close to the bottom of the root ball as possible after placement. A round-topped soil berm measuring four inches high by eight inches wide is centered on the downhill side of the root ball periphery. A three-layer of mulch is applied and pulled back one foot from the trunk of the tree.

WHEN THE PLANTING HOLE HAS BEEN BACKFILLED, POUR WATER AROUND THE ROOT BALL TO SETTLE THE SOIL. 3" LAYER OF MULCH PULLED BACK 1 FOOT FROM THE TRUNK OF THE TREE NOTES: 1.
