The shrub is positioned on a mound of undisturbed soil with its root crown set two inches above the surrounding finish grade. The planting pit is excavated to three times the width of the root ball, with scarified bottom and sides. Backfill consists of an organic amendment and native soil mixture installed in six-inch lifts and watered to settle, supplemented by organic fertilizer packets. A four-inch deep watering basin is formed around the plant and filled with three inches of shredded redwood or cedar mulch, keeping the bark four inches away from the trunk.
