This concrete paving expansion joint detail features adjacent concrete slabs cast over a prepared sub-base aggregate layer. A 3/8-inch expansion joint material is installed vertically between the slab edges and recessed 1/8 inch below the adjacent finish grade. Half-inch smooth dowels are spaced at 12 inches on center across the slab-to-slab joint to provide load transfer while permitting horizontal movement. Dowels are omitted at building walls per civil engineering requirements.
