The shrub rootball is set two inches higher than the surrounding grade within a plant pit dug to twice the width and the same depth as the rootball with scarified sides and bottom. Backfill and fertilizer application follow project planting notes. A two to three inch watering basin berm is maintained at the edge of the rootball for the first sixty to ninety days before being widened to the plant pit. A three inch deep layer of mulch is applied while kept one inch away from shrub stems to prevent rot.
