The planting pit is over-excavated to twice the diameter of the root ball to provide a three-inch deep watering basin. The existing slope is cut back to a maximum ratio of one to one and a half. The root ball is set flush with the finish grade after all binding materials are cut and removed from the top and sides before backfilling. Backfill mix is placed to the finish grade, and a layer of mulch is applied while maintaining a one-inch clearance away from the trunk.
