The tree rootball is placed on native subgrade within an amended backfill mix and surrounded by a mulch layer that is kept six inches away from the base of the trunk. A four-inch minimum height watering berm is constructed twelve inches wider than the rootball diameter. Two lodgepole stakes are placed at the outside edge of the rootball, driven into the native subgrade with their tops extending below the crown of the tree. Black plastic cinch-ties with one twist are secured to the stakes with galvanized roofing nails and wrapped loosely around the tree trunk. The imaginary line between the stakes and tree is oriented perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction.
