The rootball sits on a mound of undisturbed or compacted native soil with the root crown set one inch above the surrounding finish grade. Backfill consists of organic amendment installed in six-inch lifts and watered to settle, spanning three times the rootball width. A temporary earth berm is constructed through the end of the maintenance period where bubblers or drip irrigation are used, maintaining a minimum two-foot diameter open area in sod at the tree well. If the tree hole does not drain, a rock sump twelve inches in diameter is installed two feet six inches deep below the bottom of the planter hole, filled with three-quarter-inch gravel and covered with filter fabric. Tree stakes and vertical supports secure the rootball.
