Concrete thrust blocks are placed against mainline pipes at forty-five-degree ells, ninety-degree ells, and ninety-degree tees to absorb hydrodynamic loads. Each block bears directly against undisturbed soil in trench excavations to transfer the forces safely. Thrust blocks are required on all irrigation mains and laterals measuring two and a half inches and larger where the pipeline changes direction or terminates. Installations must provide a minimum of one cubic foot of concrete while leaving the pipe unencased. Pressure testing must be delayed for thirty-six to forty-eight hours after pouring the concrete.
