A coniferous tree is planted on a slope with the trunk flare visible and the crown set one inch above finished grade. Three two-inch round lodgepole pine tree stakes with a minimum eight-foot length are driven into the subgrade and fastened to the trunk using three-quarter-inch wide arbortie soft polypropylene material attached in a figure-eight pattern. The rootball sits on undisturbed native soil or compacted planting backfill with the sides and bottom of the planting pit broken up, and the pit is backfilled with a fifty-fifty blend of import topsoil and native soil. Burlap from the rootball is partially removed and disposed of, or completely removed if synthetic along with the wire cage. Specified mulch is applied around the tree and held back from the crown, with three-foot diameter mulch rings in lawn areas.
