The contact lap splice features overlapping reinforcing bars tied together across the specified lap splice length Ls. The non-contact lap splice features parallel reinforcing bars offset from one another by a transverse distance limited to one-fifth of the lap splice length Ls or six inches maximum, whichever is lesser, measured center-to-center.
