An isolation joint separates a concrete slab from a fixed vertical element such as a wall, step, column, vault, or curb. The concrete slab rests on a compacted subgrade and features a thickened edge adjacent to the vertical element. A compressible joint filler material is placed vertically against the fixed element to allow independent movement between the slab and the structure.
