The tree is installed with the root crown set one inch above the surrounding finish grade and the rootball resting on a mound of undisturbed or compacted native soil. The pit excavation width extends to three times the rootball width with scarified pit sides and backfilled using organic amendments per soils analysis installed in six-inch lifts and watered to settle. A temporary earth berm is maintained through the end of the maintenance period where bubblers or drip irrigation are used, and a minimum two-foot diameter open area in sod is maintained at the tree well in lawn areas. Vertical tree stakes provide lateral support. If the tree hole does not drain, a twelve-inch diameter rock sump is installed two feet six inches deep below the bottom of the planter hole, filled with three-quarter-inch gravel and covered with filter fabric.
