An expansion joint is located between a concrete paving slab and an adjacent vertical surface such as a building wall, existing paving to remain, site wall, curb, or raised planter. A one-quarter-inch joint gap is maintained between the vertical surface and the paving assembly. The joint is filled with joint sealant with sand, featuring a typical one-eighth-inch radius at the edge. The concrete paving rests on subbase layers and is separated from the vertical surface by an expansion joint filler.
