The root ball sits within an excavated plant pit sized to twice the root ball width, set on undisturbed or compacted subgrade with a bottom auger hole backfilled with drain rock. The root flare is positioned two inches above finished grade or planter soil after settlement, surrounded by an amended backfill mix and a three-inch layer of mulch kept six inches clear of the tree trunk with a mounded soil saucer. Two two-inch diameter lodge poles are installed plumb and at the same height, extending twelve inches minimum into undisturbed soil 180 degrees opposite to support the windward side. Galvanized steel wire attaches to the poles and is encased around the trunk in a reinforced black rubber hose at two-thirds to one-half the height of the tree. A tree bubbler system connects below grade, and root barriers are installed adjacent to all walks and wall conditions as required.
