The tree is set with the top of the root ball positioned two inches above the finish grade, ensuring the trunk flare remains visible above the mulch. The plant pit features angled sides and a sloped bottom with roughened surfaces over undisturbed soil, surrounded by amended backfill. Tree stakes extend four feet high and are driven a minimum of twelve inches into undisturbed soil, secured at two-thirds the height of the tree using a continuous flexible strap tie fastened with roofing nails. Mulch starts three inches away from the stem and tapers to a three-inch depth.
