Shrubs are installed with the crown visible and set at the same grade as the nursery. The planting pit width is sized to a minimum of twice the rootball diameter with the sides and bottom broken up. Undisturbed native soil or compacted planting backfill is placed beneath the rootball to eliminate settlement. The pit is backfilled with an import topsoil blend consisting of fifty percent import topsoil and fifty percent native soil, finished with a layer of specified mulch. Balled and burlapped plants require the removal and disposal of the top half of the burlap, and complete removal if synthetic, along with complete wire cage removal. Container plants require scarified matted root systems and loosened soil around the container.
