A sawcut contraction joint is formed in a concrete paving slab. The sawcut has a width of one-eighth of an inch and extends to a depth equal to one-quarter of the total paving depth. The concrete paving rests on a compacted aggregate base course and subgrade, with conditions varying per plan.
