Two wooden stakes are placed on opposing sides no closer than 12 inches from the edge of the rootball, with the height of the stake above finished grade set equal to the first branch and aligned parallel with the prevailing wind direction. A trunk guard and synthetic strapping made of three-quarter-inch flat woven polypropylene rated for 900-pound loads are looped around the central leader below the first branch, using one strap per stake. Heavy-duty steel staples attach the strapping to the wooden stakes. Additionally, three guy wire deadmen are placed a minimum of 10 inches from the edge of the rootball.
