The shrub is positioned so the top of the root ball is even with the finish grade inside a shrub pit sized to two times the rootball diameter. Planting backfill mixture is placed around the root ball, watered, and tamped to remove air, with fertilizer tablets added per specifications. A temporary watering basin is formed with a three-inch continuous rim of amended planting soil. The entire planting bed receives a three-inch minimum depth of mulch, leaving a two-inch clearance without mulch at the root crown.
