The tree root ball sits in an excavation with a diameter equal to three times the ball diameter, positioned so that the top of the root ball is four inches above the finished grade. All wire and synthetic materials are removed from the root ball prior to backfilling, and burlap is removed from the top one-third of the root ball. The pit is backfilled with amended planting mix, which is watered and tamped to remove air pockets, surrounded by a formed saucer and mulch as specified. Three one-eighth inch galvanized guy wires are set at a 45-degree angle per tree, secured with rubber tree ties with 17-gauge wire ties at stakes and anchored with Duckbill Anchor #68-DTS driven a minimum of 14 inches into the ground.
