The tree is placed in a planting pit twice the size of the root ball, with the trunk flare positioned one inch above the finished grade. The root ball is prepared by removing the wire basket and burlap from the top and sides, and the root collar is exposed for inspection. The pit is backfilled with a soil mix in six-inch layers, which are lightly compacted and watered thoroughly without tamping, while the sides of the pit are scarified. A three-inch layer of mulch is applied at the surface. The tree is secured with at least two stakes driven outside the root ball to half the height of the tree, using rubber tree chain for attachment.
