The root ball is set within a plant pit with angled sides excavated into undisturbed soil, featuring a width of two times the root ball diameter. The pit is filled with amended backfill surrounding the root ball. A water retention berm is formed at the surface alongside a two-to-one transition slope merging with the existing slope. Mulch is applied over the backfill and held back three inches from the base of the trunk.
