An isolation joint separates a concrete paving slab from a fixed structural element such as a wall, step, column, vault, or curb. Joint filler is placed vertically against the fixed element to allow independent movement and prevent cracking. The concrete slab bears on a compacted base material and subgrade. A thickened edge at the slab termination provides additional structural support.
