Shrubs are installed in a planting pit sized to a minimum of twice the rootball width with roughened sides and bottom for a firm base. The rootball sits on compacted soil so that the first root emerging from the main stem rests one inch above the finished grade. Burlap and bindings are removed before backfilling with prepared planting soil. The surface is finished with a three-inch top mulch layer feathered back from the stem and a six-inch earth berm around the planting pit.
