A newly planted tree is stabilized using two 2-inch diameter lodgepole pine tree stakes driven into the ground outside the rootball, set with 6-inch conical points and standing 72 inches high. The trunk is secured to the stakes using a double strand of 14-gauge galvanized wire wrapped in clear vinyl and twisted tight. The planting pit is excavated to twice the diameter of the rootball and backfilled with a mixture of 50 percent topsoil and 50 percent native soil along with specified fertilizer. All burlap and wire baskets are removed prior to final backfilling. Trees are planted high enough to allow positive drainage away from the rootball, with a 36-inch diameter tree well established in lawn areas and filled with 2 inches of specified mulch over a sloped surface.
