The root ball sits within a plant pit with angled sides excavated into undisturbed soil, measuring twice the width of the root ball. Amended backfill surrounds the root ball to support establishment on the slope. A water retention berm is formed downslope to capture moisture. Mulch is applied over the pit and held back three inches from the base of the trunk. A two-to-one transition slope blends the planting pit into the existing grade.
