A vegetable bed soil profile consisting of an eighteen-inch total depth built over an undisturbed or compacted subgrade. The bottom layer comprises twelve inches of horticultural subsoil beneath six inches of topsoil amended with a two-to-one compost-to-base-loam mix. The subgrade surface and the transition zone between the subsoil and topsoil are scarified to promote root penetration and soil bonding. Vertical dimensions specify a six-inch topsoil depth, a twelve-inch subsoil depth, and an overall depth of one foot six inches.
