An irrigation controller is connected to an underground grounding system featuring either a copper ground plate measuring 4 inches by 96 inches by 0.0625 inches or a 5/8-inch by 10-foot ground rod. Six AWG solid bare copper wires run from the controller through a plastic sweep elbow of 1-1/2 inches or larger to the grounding element via a Cadweld connection. Earth contact material surrounds the copper ground plate, which is installed 30 inches below grade. A concrete pad sits adjacent to the controller assembly, and either the ground plate or ground rod option is chosen since only one is needed.
