The shrub is set with its root crown two inches above the surrounding finish grade. The planting pit is excavated to three times the width of the root ball with the bottom and sides scarified. Backfill consists of organic amendments installed in six-inch lifts and watered to settle, supplemented by organic fertilizer packets. A three-inch watering basin is formed at the surface and filled with shredded pine or cedar mulch.
