A vine or shrub rootball rests on existing or re-compacted soil within a planting hole excavated in modified soil of varying depth. A lean nursery stake leans against the face of the wall to brace the plant and is scheduled for removal after the establishment period. A four-inch by eight-inch round-topped soil berm constructed around the root ball periphery sits above the rootball. Soil is tamped around the root ball in six-inch lifts prior to mulching, with water poured around the root ball upon backfilling to settle the soil. A three-inch layer of mulch covers the planting area with no more than one inch placed directly on top of the root ball. Finished grade transitions to adjacent pavement.
