The root ball is set one inch above the finish grade within a plant pit featuring angled sides excavated to twice the root ball width. The pit is filled with amended backfill surrounding the undisturbed soil base. Mulch is applied starting three inches from the stem and tapered to a three-inch depth at the finish grade.
